That is not a scare tactic. It is a mechanical fact about low-grade zinc alloy housings and four-button combination mechanisms with fewer unique codes than a bike lock from a pound shop.

Why they're still everywhere

The honest answer is that carer access is a genuine problem to solve, and a £15 wall-box solves most of it. A carer arriving at 7am to help someone in Goodmayes or Loxford doesn't want to wake the whole house. The client may not be able to answer the door. Family members may be twenty miles away. A key safe does what it promises: it holds a key, and it lets someone in.
